Water separation performance of Carbon Nanomembranes

Scientists at CNM Technologies were successful in transferring the academically proven separation performance of Carbon Nanomembranes (see Yang et al., ACS Nano 12, 4695 (2018)) into a concept for high-performance waterfiltration membranes.

They produced CNM-based hybridmembranes with a few square centimetre size and demonstrated the performance in a simple osmosis experiment (see movie). In this experiment, water passes from the front chamber (filled with pure water) through a semi-permeable membrane into the back chamber (filled with a sodium chloride solution in water) due to the osmotic pressure. This simple demonstration shows that CNM-based membranes are highly permeable for water and can even block the passage of small ions. Amongst the potential applications are forward osmosis and ultra pure water filtration.

The fabrication concept is scalable. CNM Technologies and its investors plan to build a pilot scale production with an eventual yield of a few 10.000 m²/year to be able to supply first customers demands.
